Drunk Rich Aunty
This collection is inspired by my experience as a black/ Zimbabwean woman living in the UK. Coming from a Zimbabwean background, I have always found it difficult to open up and talk about my feelings and experiences. The idea of therapy and seeking help for mental health and social issues was very taboo in my community which made it very hard for people like me to get any help and support. Having felt like this for most of my life, I want to challenge the perception of the black experience and mental health by creating a collection that opens up a dialogue about being black in the UK.

The sage, the spiritual healer, the wise old woman. This artwork is about journeys that are guided by our ancestors. In Jungian psychology, the sangoma is one of wisdom, knowledge and power. It represents the innate spiritual aspect of our personality in the unconscious and often takes the form of a spiritual guide or a teacher to a hero on their journey. My spiruality has always guided me when I have felt lost, it helps me feel connected to the Earth and grounds me.

This artwork was inspired by the romanticism and fetishism of black women. Her curves and full lips entice him. Her black girl magic intrigues him, yet her struggles are unattractive. He doesn’t care to know her story, he doesn’t understand the pain underneath her exotic hair. He doesn’t see colour he says, “that stuff doesn’t happen in the UK”. She desperately searches for love and finds it in the Far-right places. She wants a man but he’s looking for an Ebony Mistress.

In my culture family is everything, you do not just have one set of parents, you don't have cousins, you have brothers and sisters. You come from a tribe; a pride of lions.

Jung would describe her as the divine mother or the Animus. The feminine energy that nurtures and loves unconditionally. What Chido represents in the black experience collection is the strength it takes to survive as a black woman. She is often overlooked, picked last or silenced. She is often labelled as aggressive, argumentative and angry. No one takes the time to understand her, nurture her or ask her why she weeps. She is forced to be strong, forced to be fierce but underneath it all she is love.

Thandiwe
About Artwork
This was inspired by love, heartbreak and friendship. Of Zulu origin, the meaning of Thandiwe is "loved one". Growing up in the UK taught me an important lesson about keeping your culture and Native language. I met a stranger a few years ago and we instantly became best friends after finding out we were from the same country. Meeting someone from the same country meant we had a similar understanding of certain things, we had been through similar journeys and could speak the same language. The bond was undeniable, we were connected by history, traditions, values, blackness, Africaness and Zimbabweanness.

The Game
About Artwork
At first glance, this painting was inspired by 90's pop culture and vintage video games. Each character has its own story to tell and has its own life but they all merge together in a synergy of chaos. When you really engage with this painting, it speaks about the new challenges black people face post BLM. As a nation, we have been exposed to horrific images of black men and women being brutalised by the police and racists. We marched the streets of London, Minneapolis and even Tokyo in hopes for change and equality. But this change doesn’t come free, it comes with a hefty price that taxes our mental health. Our painful wounds are now exposed, the racists feel more comfortable being openly bigoted. We have lost ‘friends’ and family members over arguments on race but we no longer stand for the microaggressions at the office watering holes. The Game speaks about how black people now have a ‘Black card’ to match our black tick boxes. Black people are now being plastered on billboards, tv adverts and magazine covers but is it for genuine reasons or is it another way to exploit black excellence? Do we as black people bite the bate and play the Black card? Or do we refuse to be another notch on the fraudulent equality and diversity checklist?

This piece was inspired by a warped power dynamic of the “Noble”. It speaks about how the world is shifting but highlights the suffering and discernment that has come before the change. Black people, gay people, disabled people have had to suffer and riot before the Nobles see them as equal. It’s the Nobles in high chairs who will scream equality and diversity but remain ignorant to their own biases. What are you willing to do for change?

This painting was inspired by the mundane tasks of life mixed with the chaos that lives in our psyche. I often find myself watching people doing ordinary things wondering what their lives are actually like. Who are they when they are not doing everyday things like grocery shopping or walking the dog. What are their dreams? what is their toxic trait? It makes me reflect on myself and my own life behind closed doors, am I what people expect, how do they perceive me. Does my skin offend them? Is my laugh as annoying to them as it is to me? This image questions my own existence.
